Winter Simulation Conference 2018 – follow up

A very well attended WinterSim Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, celebrated simulation as a noble cause. Attendees were up on 2017 with over 800 conference goers taking part in the four-day event, and AnyLogic enjoyed its best year yet. Here are a few notes, highlights, photos, and a video.

While the presenters covered a wide variety of simulation modeling uses, with the focus on noble causes highlighting humanitarian cases especially, the theme of digital twins featured strongly among vendors — for those with further interest, we have an AnyLogic digital twin white paper that looks at how they are developed and applied.

The presentation papers continued a trend of previous years, increasingly featuring and explicitly referencing models built in AnyLogic. Excluding vendor presentations, 38% of all the case study papers featured AnyLogic – a 10% gain in the last two years.

Sunday afternoon’s AnyLogic workshop provided an introduction to the new Material Handling Library features that can be found in AnyLogic 8.4 αlpha, as well as the latest AnyLogic Cloud developments, including the powerful API functionality.

With its vendor presentation on Monday, AnyLogic was the only vendor to speak of the increasing use of simulation in connection with machine learning. With a variety of usage scenarios and active development from both industry and academia, machine learning combined with simulation looks set to remain a hot topic.

Monday evening saw the attendees gather at the Svenska Mässan for the general reception. It was an occasion with a special significance for AnyLogic, as it marked 18 years since its first release at the Winter Simulation Conference in 2000. Andrei Borshchev, AnyLogic CEO, took to the stage to mark the occasion and commence the evening.
